Telangana to get a new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plant soon

Hyderabad, Dec 09: The Union Minister for Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh assured to set up a modern state of the art Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plant at Paloncha in Khammam district of Telangana here on Friday.

While speaking to media persons here, Mr. Singh said considering the availability of Land and Other Resources at Paloncha, the government has decided to set up a modern EAF plant of 1.5 million tonnes per annum capacity after the techno-economic feasibility is established.

He advised the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) to conduct a detailed study."We are open to taking up the EAF plant through JV with state government or through PPP Mode," the Minister said.

However, welcoming the Steel Ministry's decision, Telangana Minister Industries for Mines KT Rama Rao said the plant would come at the existing Sponge Iron, which was outdated. Mr. Rao requested Mr. Singh to consider his government's request to set up an integrated steel plant at Bayyaram in Khammam district, in addition to the EAF plant.
