Nitin Gadkari : Godavari-Cauvery River interlinking soon

New Delhi Nov 24: The Central Government has already started working on Interlinking of rivers and is now planning to link Godavari, Krishna, Penna and Cauvery rivers. Earlier the Andrapradesh Government has successfully linked Godavari and Krishna rivers by building Pattiseema project and the polavaram project would further link the rivers.

Union water resources minister Nitin Gadkari has said that "My ministry has decided to transfer surplus water from Godavari river to Krishna, to Pennar river (Karnataka) and finally to Cauvery".

He said that "this move would ensure that water would be diverted to water-scarce states as 3,000 TMC of water from the Godavari goes waste into the sea."

Gadkari added that "I am going to call a meeting of chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and with their approval, we will finalise the plan and We will treat these projects as national projects because this is a river connectivity project".

Minister added that "90 percent of the cost will be borne by Government of India and 10 percent by state governments and revealed how water would be diverted from the Godavari to Cauvery.

Ist stage -300TMC would be transferred from the Godavari to the Polavaram project (in Andhra Pradesh) through Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and to river Krishna.

II stage -linkage of penna and Krishna river- water would be diverted to Somasila dam on Pennar river.

III stage -linkage of penna -Cauvery: The water from somasila dam would be diverted to Grand Anaicut on river Cauvery.
