Catalonia: Puigdemont accepts snap elections

On Tuesday, Carles Puigdemont, the ousted leader of Catalonia said that he has accepted the snap elections.

The snap elections were called by Spain’s central government after taking direct control of the region after independence was declared by Catalonia leaders. He said he was not seeking asylum in Belgium and would return to Catalonia.

Puigdemont’s announcement that he would accept the regional election on Dec. 21 confirmed that the Madrid government had gained the upper hand in the protracted struggle over Catalonia

“I ask the Catalan people to prepare for a long road. Democracy will be the foundation of our victory,” Puigdemont said.

In a bid to resolve the standoff the spanish government has welcomed Puigdemont to take part and stand in snap elections scheduled in Dec 21.
