Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar Resigned

New Delhi, Oct 20: Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, the country's second-most senior legal officer, has resigned citing personal reasons here on Friday.

"The government is good to me, but I tendered my resignation due to personal reasons," Mr. Kumar told media.

The senior advocate was appointed Solicitor General in 2014, soon after the Narendra Modi government came to power at the Centre. Mukul Rohatgi was appointed Attorney General, the government's chief legal advisor, at that time.

Mr. Rohatgi had resigned in June this year, declining an extension of his three-year term. He too had cited personal reasons. KK Venugopal took over as Attorney General.

When Mr. Rohatgi reigned, there was speculation that Ranjit Kumar could quit too, but he had continued as Solicitor General. He was lately not handling very important cases in the Supreme Court.
