Delhi HC: Cannot order to treat Vande Mataram equal to Jana Gana Mana

A petition was filed by Delhi resident Gautam R Morarka, who urged the bench that National song should be treated equally as National anthem and Centre must be given instructions regarding the same. He said that proper dignity and respect be maintained when Vande Mataram is played or sung.

However, the Delhi high court dismissed the petition and said “Though we agree with the petitioner that Vande Mataram be recognised by the respondent as equal to Jana Gana Mana, we are of the view that we are unable to grant the relief sought in the petition,”

The plea was opposed by Centre which said that Jana Gana Mana is our National Anthem and even though Vande Mataram occupies a “unique and special place” in every Indians heart it cannot be treated at par with Jana Gana Mana.
