Mumbai OCT 15: Many people celebrate Diwali by cleaning there houses and traders perform special pujas and open new trade books.The five-day celebration of a festival starts from the celebration of Dhanteras.

Dhanteras/ Dhantrayodashi: This festival is celebrated two days before Diwali or on the thirteenth day of a cycle between a full moon and no moon.

Many people prefer to buy Silver/Gold and other festival items on this day and they consider that Goddess Lakshmi will bless them when buy the above articles on this day.

Many people also keep a fast on this day and the fast is broken after doing Lakshmi-Kubera Puja in the evening.The Dhanteras story is also known as Dhanteras Vrat Katha.

Mythological Story :

Once, Goddess Lakshmi insisted Lord Vishnu to accompany Him during one of His visits to the earth. Lord Vishnu agreed but on the condition that She would not fall for earthly temptations and would not look in the south direction. Goddess Lakshmi agreed to this condition of Lord Vishnu.

However during their visit to the earth Goddess Lakshmi broke her pledge and started moving in the southern direction, She was mesmerized by the beauty of yellow mustard flowers and Sugarcane fields on the earth and decorated herself with the mustard flowers.

When Lord Vishnu got annoyed by seeing his wife and asked Her to spend the next twelve years on the earth as a penance, serving at the field of the poor farmer who has cultivated mustard.

Goddess Lakshmi served the farmer and he became prosperous and wealthy, When Lord Vishnu came to the earth in disguise of an ordinary man to take Goddess Lakshmi back, she revealed her true identity and told him that She would visit him every year during the night of Krishna Trayodashi before Diwali and the day of the return of Goddess Lakshmi is celebrated as Dhanteras which is also known as Dhantrayodashi.
