America's Exit from UNESCO

The recent decisions taken by the president of America, Donald Trump are stunning the whole world. With his rhetoric as well as special emphasis on America First,America First, the president is applauded by some and at the same time criticised by some other.

As of his latest announcement withdrawing membership from
United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which is the cultural wing of United Nations Organisation (UNO). This move is really a disadvantage for the world today. The rich country, from 2008 economical slowdown had to follow austere measures in many a way.

The UNO has 194 member countries, and the support of America though with a view for its own benefits, is the strength for it.Just as America wanted to get away from climate change accord, Iran Nuclear deal matter, now it wants to distance from the cultural wing of UNO. There is much of dislike in the heart of America regarding UNESCO 's acceptance of Palestine as a member nation.



In 2011 many of member countries voted favourably for Palestine and about one-third of them were disinterested.America, Israel were against this move.Also, declaration of the Hebron city in Palestine as world Heritage city by UNESCO is not palatable for America and Israel.

The number of Heritage sites declared by UNESCO in America are only 23 compared to Italy with 53, China 52, India 35 etc.Under Such circumstances, there is not much incentive left for America to be on the cultural path. As it feels Spending its resources for this as of not much use.

President Trump took this decision as the Obama administration was also not keen on this cultural wing of UN.The Paris headquarters organization's present Director General is Irina Bokova.It seems the US State Department wants to form some permanent observer mission to UNESCO later.To present US views and expertise America showed the desire to be a non-member observer state.This withdrawl comes into effect from 2018 end.
