TS Govt to move SC against NGTs stay on Kaleshwaram project

Hyderabad, Oct 6: The Telangana government decided on Friday to go for an appeal in Supreme court against stay order for Kaleshwaram project by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday.

"The government is committed to clear the obstacles for the project by obtaining necessary clearances and providing drinking water to 13 districts under its purview," the official said.

Meanwhile, Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao termed the NGT stay on Kaleshwaram project works as "temporary obstacle" and said the government was committed to complete the project expeditiously.

He criticised the Congress leaders for obstructing irrigation projects for cheap political gains without considering the larger public interest. He said the Congress government could not secure clearances to Pranahita-Chevella project during its 10-year-rule and it was the TRS government which reached an accord with Maharashtra and ensured commencement of works.

Kaleshwaram project was taken up as a continuation of the Pranahita-Chevella project and the government would approach the Supreme Court seeking justice.

The project was an important constituent of Mission Bhagiratha, launched with a view to providing safe drinking water to all the households across the State.
