Nobel Peace Prize 2017 awarded to ICAN

Washington Oct 6: The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on Friday. The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was selected by a panel appointed by the Norwegian parliament from a total of 318 known and reported candidates.

ICAN is a coalition of non-governmental organisations from around 100 different countries around the globe. CAN has been the leading civil society actor in the effort to achieve a prohibition of nuclear weapons under international law. The Nobel Committee emphasizes that the next steps towards attaining a world free of nuclear weapons must involve the nuclear-armed states.

The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, said "the award had been made in recognition of the group's work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons".

Currently Nobel prize is awardeded under the name of Alfred Nobel and it would be awarded to
" the person/Organisation who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
