Malegaon blast: Bombay HC grants bail to accused Major Ramesh Upadhyay

New Delhi, Sept 26: The Bombay High Court (HC) today has granted bail to retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The court has granted bail to bring parity - since the other prime accused in the case have been granted bail.

The National Investigation Agency NIA which is probing the case in its charge sheet had cited transcripts of phone conversations between Upadhyay and Purohit as prime evidence against the former.

Earlier The Supreme Court had last month granted bail to Purohit in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Seven people were killed in a bomb blast on 29 September 2008 at Malegaon, a communally-sensitive textile town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra.

A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act court had earlier ruled that the Anti-Terrorism Squad had wrongly applied this law against Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Purohit, and nine others.
