Rajiv Mehrishi takes oath as new CAG

New Delhi, Sept 25: Former home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Monday has assumed the charges as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.He has succeeded Shashi Kant Sharma, who demitted office on Friday.

President Ram Nath Kovind has administered the oath of office and secrecy at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was attended by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi among other dignitaries.



Mehrishi is a 1978 batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, completed his two-year fixed term as the home secretary last month.His tenure would be about 3 years. New CAG holds Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK). He also possesses Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees from Delhi University.

Earlier he has held several posts in both his state cadre Rajasthan and in the Centre. Before his appointment as the home secretary, he worked as economic affairs secretary and chief secretary of Rajasthan. Mehrishi has also worked as secretary in departments of chemicals and fertilizers, and Overseas Indian Affairs.

Currently, CAG is the body responsible for auditing the programs and policies of both center and state government schemes so that public money is not wasted.
