Mumbai registers its highest 24-hour September rainfall for the decade

Heavy Rains hits Mumbai CITY

Mumbai, September 20: Heavy rains hit the Mumbai city for the past one day, After incessant rain since Tuesday afternoon, Mumbai recorded its highest 24-hour September rainfall for the decade and second highest all-time high September day rain for the city.

Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning lashed Mumbai, throwing life out of gear. Total 56 flights have been diverted since last evening when the rain began.

Mumbai airport main runway remains closed for flight operations. Heavy rainfall warning removed, intermittent rainfall likely over city and suburbs for next 48 hours. At least 13 Mumbai-Delhi flights delayed and 15 canceled. Total 56 flights have been diverted since last evening when the rain began.



The diversions increased after 10 pm when the Spice aircraft overshot the main runway rendering it unserviceable. The city was just 14.5mm short of recording the all-time high 24 hours September rainfall at 318.2mm recorded on September 12, 1981.

Mumbai's average rainfall for September is 312.3mm, which was surpassed over the past 24 hours. Currently, the city has recorded 536.4mm in September. The total rainfall this season is at 2879.5mm as against the annual average of 2258mm rain.
