Hackers hid malware in CCleaner software

New Delhi, September 18: Top hackers hacked CCleaner's security to inject malware into the app and distribute it to millions of users.

A malicious program was planted inside the software, which is downloaded as often as five million times per week and is used to delete cookies and junk programs to make computers and Android phones run faster.

British company Piriform said it estimates that 2.27 million people used the infected software, but downplayed the need for panic among its users.

"We resolved this quickly and believe no harm was done to any of our users," the company said in a statement.

In a blog post, Piriform confirmed that two programs released in August were compromised. It advised users of CCleaner v5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud v1.07.3191 to download new versions. A spokeswoman said that 2.27 million users had downloaded the August version of CCleaner while only 5,000 users had installed the compromised version of CCleaner Cloud.
