Yamuna river accident: 22 drowned as boat capsizes

An over-loaded boat carrying 60 people capsized in Yamuna river in Baghpat district on Thursday and 22 people were drowned.

Due to the incident the villagers resorted to violence on Delhi-Saharanpur highway. The incident took place when the boat reached close to Katha village.

"The boat was ferrying passengers more than its capacity. Most of the passengers of the ill-fated boat were women. As soon as the boat reached mid-stream it capsized," the district magistrate said.



Rescue team , police officials, NDRF, divers reached the spot and began rescue operation, about 12 people are rescued.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed tweeted about this incident and expressed his grief; he even said Rs 2 lakh as relief will be given to the kin of the deceased.
