Kannadigas attacks Telugu students

Bangalore, Sept 10: Here a ruckus situation has unveiled in the neighboring state Karnataka's capital Bengaluru on Saturday.

The Kannadigas attacked the aspirants of Regional Rural Banks (RRB) and Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) belonging to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The AP students were obstructed from appearing for the exam by members of various organizations of Karnataka. Some of them also tore off the hall-tickets of candidates from Andhra Pradesh.

Demonstrations at Hubli and Bengaluru Railway stations was even staged by the agitators demanding that the locals should be given priority for examinations and recruitment.

As per the norm, preference to be given to locals with command over regional language for better service was suggested.

Amid ever growing unemployment in the state, where locals are not getting enough representation in Grade C and D jobs of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), the demand rises up. Due to the recent changes made in the eligibility conditions with regard to language proficiency, people from other states are getting selected.

In a meeting with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman S G Siddaramaiah demanded that for recruitment of staff in RRBs the local language be made compulsory and with regard to language proficiency, restore the previous eligibility criteria.

"Due to the new language proficiency norms, only 300 Kannadigas out of 7,000 who appeared last year were selected. This year, 9,000 candidates are going to appear, but the existing jobs will again go to outsiders," he told reporters after the meeting.
