Modi Govt Focuses on interlinking?

New Delhi, Sept 2: A major initiative would take place soon. The Sources say that Modi Government will start an Ambitious project of Interlinking 60 rivers of the country. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 5.5 lakh crore.

Union Government is hoping that the interlinking of rivers would end the problem of the floods and droughts and also reduce the dependence of monsoon for irrigation of fields by farmers and also generate huge megawatts of electricity. The project would be taken up in phase wise manner and the Dams would be built, canal networks would be linked.

The following rivers would be interlinked

* Ken and Betwa
* Par-Tapi - Narmada
* Daman Ganga - Pinjal
* kosi-Mechi
* kosi-Ghaghara
* Gandakh -ganga
* Ghaghara -yamuna
* yamuna-sabarmati
* Chunar-Son barrage
* Son Barrage-southern ganga downstreams
* Manas-Sankosh-Thesta- Ganga
* JOgi ghoshi- Thesta-faracca
* ganga- Damodar-Suvarnarekha
* Suvarnarekha- mahanadi
* mahanadi(mani Bhadra)-Godavari (Dhavaleswaram)
* Godavari(Icchampally)- Krishna(Nagarjun Sagar)
* Godavari(Polavaram)- Krishna(Vijayawada)
* Krishna (Almatti)-pennar
* Pennar (Somasila)-paler-Cauvery (Grand Anicut)
* cauvery- Vaigal-Gundur
* parbathi-kalisinth-Chambal
* Bedthi-wardha
* netravathi-hemavathi

However many Environmentalists and Tiger Lovers have opposed the projects because they claim that these projects would harm the environment.
