Union Cabinet nod for committee to sub-categorise OBC

New Delhi Aug 23: A good news for OBC in the country.
Union Cabinet Chaired by PM Modi has cleared a proposal to set up a commission to examine the sub-categorization of 'Other Backward Classes', or OBCs.

The cabinet has also approved the proposal to raise the OBC creamy layer criterion to Rs 8 lakh from Rs 6 lakh.The above decisions were announced by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today.

Minister has said the objectives of the commission set up are as follows

* The commission is expected to submit a report within 12 weeks of the appointment of a chairperson.

* To examine the extent of inequitable distribution of benefits of reservation among the castes/ communities included in the broad category of OBCs, with reference to the OBCs included in the Central list.

* To work out the mechanism, criteria, norms, and parameters, in a scientific approach, for sub-categorization within such OBCs

* To take up the exercise of identifying the respective castes/communities/ sub-castes/ synonyms in the Central List of OBCs and classifying them into their respective sub-categories.

Jaitley has also said that we have taken this decision after the NCBC has recommended the central government and also parliamentary standing committee in 2012 has recommended sub categorization of OBC.

The cabinet has also renamed the SAMPADA scheme of Food Processing Ministry to "Pradhan Mantri KISAN SAMPADA Yojana".
