Triple talaq victims hail Supreme Court verdict

Kendrapara (Odisha) Aug 22: Victims of triple talaq across Odisha today expressed jubilation over the Supreme Court's landmark verdict striking down the age-old practice.

A cross-section of Muslim women said that the verdict terming the practice as unconstitutional empowered them to live life with dignity on equal terms with their male counterparts.

"The fear of triple talaq always haunts us during solemnization of 'nikkah', but now it becomes a thing of the past," they said in unison.

"The verdict has given me the strength to fight back.

My life turned miserable after my spouse uttered talaq thrice over phone from Saudi Arabia eight months back. I was separated from him in a flash after 4 years of conjugal life.

My parents took up the matter with the clerics, but I was told by them that my marriage was over," Nazma Begum (21) said with tears rolling down her cheeks.

"I have suffered a lot. Now the court ruling paved the way for a new era for Muslim women who are no longer going to suffer like me," she said.

Lali Biwi (27) hailed the verdict, saying, "It is a victory for Muslim women. The Supreme Court has come to the rescue of all Muslim women in the country. Now it is up to the government to frame a law within next six months to abolish it bag and baggage.

After her marriage ended with her husband uttering talaq thrice, Lali was left with a 3-year-old son to take care. It would be impossible to live life with dignity if her parents had not supported her.

The story of Rizwana Begum (28) from Jajpur district is the same.

I have an unmarried younger sister. At least she will not meet my fate due to triple talaq as the court had pronounced it illegal, Rizwana said.

It was an evil practice that was in a crying need to be dumped, Rukshana Begum from Bhubaneswar said.

"My husband is a progressive-minded person. I have never thought of triple talaq affecting my life. However, I was perturbed to read news reports highlighting the sufferings of triple talaq victims," she said.
