Powerful earthquake hits FIJI

Wellington Aug 19: A sad incident took place.
A powerful earthquake struck off Fiji on Saturday which was detected by U.S. seismologists.The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 6.4 on Richter scale.

Sources say that there was no damage and no casualties were reported.However scientists detected that the quake was considerably deep.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said that "the natural diaster took place at 3:00 p.m. (0200 GMT) and was centered around 287 kilometers (178 miles) east of Suva, at a depth of 538 kilometres".

The quake has occurred in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity due to collisions between continental plates. However, no Tsunami warnings were given.
