Man held for possessing foreign currency worth Rs.57 lakhs

Hyderabad, Aug 18: The DRI officials have arrested a passenger at the RGIA Airport in Shamshabad on charges of illegally possessing foreign currency equivalent to over Rs 57 lakh in Indian currency here on Thursday.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI) officials intercepted the passenger, who after clearing immigration and security checks, was to board an Emirates flight to Dubai.

After examining his baggage, officials found foreign currency in the form of UAE Dirhams, Saudi Riyals and Omani Riyals.

On interrogation, the passenger informed that the currency was obtained from unauthorized dealers and that it did not belong to him.

He said that he was carrying the currency at the behest of someone for delivering it in Dubai.

As the currency was obtained in violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and he attempted to carry it illegally, the DRI authorities nabbed the passenger and seized the currency.
