100 volcanoes discovered in Antarctica

Antarctica Aug 14: A discovery took place recently.
Scientists have uncovered the Globe's largest volcanic region. They have discovered that West Antarctica has more number of volcanos located below the surface of the vast ice sheet. The discovery was made by researchers at Edinburgh University.

They have revealed that almost 100 volcanoes are present and one of them could be as tall as the Eiger a 4,000 meters volcano located in Switzerland.

Scientists have said that there could be danger in the future because of the explosion of volcanos may destabilize West Antarctica's ice sheets.

They have also said that volcanos may not reach the surface but the heat generated could melt the ice so that the water level of the sea increases.

The researchers have discovered the facts using the ice-penetrating radars and comparing the data with satellite and databases.

* The newly discovered volcanoes range in height from 100 to 3,850 meters.

* All volcanoes are covered in ice.

* These lie in layers that are more than 4km thick.

* These active peaks are located in West Antarctic rift system

* The volcanoes stretches 3,500km from Antarctica's Ross ice shelf to the Antarctic peninsula.

Finally, the scientists have cautioned about the presence of volcanoes.
