24,000 NRI register as voters

New Delhi, Aug 14: A data was released yesterday. Election Commission has said that 24,000 overseas Indians have registered themselves as voters in India.EC has recently launched an online portal for Indian citizens living abroad. People can register online so that they would be entitled to cast their vote.

The data revealed that out of 24,348 voters registered 23,556 are from Kerala, 364 from Punjab and 14 from Gujarat.The portal named 'Overseas Indian Voters' can be accessed through Election Commission's website "eci.nic.in."

EC has also said that this facility is only available for Indian overseas citizens who have not acquired any other country citizenship.NRI will be communicated by the election body after they have completed the registration process.

Earlier the central government has cleared a proposal to extend proxy voting to overseas Indians by amending electoral laws so that more number of overseas citizens can participate in the voting process.Let's hope that overseas citizens utilize this facility.
