New Delhi, August 05: BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu has been elected as Vice-President. In the polling for Vice Presidential election on Saturday, he defeated opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi by 272 votes. Venkaiah Naidu got 516 votes while Gopalkrishna Gandhi got 244 votes.

Naidu, who is the Vice-President, is the second leader of the RSS background. Earlier, BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (1923-2010) was elected to this post in 2002. He was elected the country's 11th Vice-President.

The profile of Naidu is as follows :

1. Venkaiah Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

2. After completing school studies from Nellore, he graduated in politics from there. He took a degree in international law from the Law College of Visakhapatnam.



3. On April 14, 1971, married Usha. They have a son and a daughter. The son's name is Harshavardhana while the daughter's name is Deepa Venkata.

4. During the college, National Self-Service has joined the Sangh. Naidu first came to headlines from Jai Andhra movement in 1972.


5. In 1975, they also went to prison in the Emergency. From 1977 to 1980, he was the president of Youth Wing.

6. At the age of 29, he became the first MLA in 1978. In 1983, the Assembly reached and slowly emerged as the BJP's biggest leader in the state.


7. Naidu was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998 for the first time after remaining in various BJP positions. Since then, he became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2004, 2010 and 2016.

8. After NDA's victory in 1999, he was given charge of the Ministry of Rural Development in the Government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
