Opposition slams government over gas subsidy

New Delhi Aug 1: Opposition parties on Tuesday have criticized the government over its decision to gradually do away with the LPG subsidy.

They have termed the decision as cruel and demanded that the proposal must be withdrawn. The issue was raised in both houses of parliament.

Congress leader K C Venugopal raised the issue and said that "it will adversely affect the common man and there was no justification for it when the crude oil prices had gone down."

Trinamool Congress leader (TMC) Sudip Bandopadhyay has also spoken on this issue and has said that "the steady increase in the LPG cylinder price by the government had been highest in the last six years, he has described the move as anti-welfare and he wondered what will be the
fate of over 2.5 crore women who were given the gas connection for free.

CPI-M leader Sreemathy Teacher has said that "the decision was cruel".

N K Premachandran RSP leader has "accused the government of avoiding transparency on the matter as he said the decision was taken in March this year and was not shared publicly".

Similarly, the matter was raised in Rajya Sabha by Naresh Agarwal (SP ), Anand Sharma (Congress) and other members.
