New traffic system will be implemented from August 1

Hyderabad, July 05: The city police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said the new traffic system will be implemented from August 1 onwards in Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad Police Commissionerate.

He spoke to media persons at Hyderabad Police Commissionerate in Basher Bagh on Tuesday, The enforcement of the system will mean that anyone accruing 12 points after violating traffic rules, the violation of each carrying varying points, will have his or her license is suspended for one year. Further violations will result in suspensions of lengthier periods, said City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy, while announcing here on Tuesday that the system would be in force from next month.

The system will be applicable to traffic violations across all the three Police Commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda.

Implementation of the system will have the City Traffic Police collecting and compiling data of violations or offenses committed by commuters from August 1 onwards.

Once the violations cross 12 points, which was set after a detailed study of similar systems followed in other countries, the driving license would be suspended, Reddy said.

Each violation carries varying points, with driving without wearing seatbelt or helmet meaning one point, while drunk driving of four-wheelers would mean four points and so on.

“Once tally of a driver touches 12 within a period of 24 months, his/her driving license would be suspended for one year,” said the Commissioner.

If a person, after having his license suspended once, again accrues 12 points, the suspension would be for two years, while for a third time, the suspension would be for three years.

A person holding a learner’s license has a smaller limit, with anyone accruing five points during the validity period of the license would have the learner’s license canceled.

"They will have to get a fresh learner's license issued, that too on the production of a certificate as prescribed by a recognized driving school or establishment," Reddy said.
