Alcohol Consumption May Harm the Brain

Paris, June 8: Even Moderate Alcohol consumption is also attained with an increased risk of brain damage and a slight decline in mental skills, A study revealed here on Wednesday.

University of Oxford and University College London Experts studied 550 people over a 30-year period, repeatedly assessing their alcohol consumption and cognition.

These experts examined the images of brains who were participated is enabled them to explore linked between average alcohol use, cognition, and brain structure.

Researchers said the more a person drank, the more likely they were to have brain damage that affects memory and spatial navigation, which is called as hippocampal atrophy. It was early marked as Alzheimer's disease.

According to Study Published, 'Men and women who consume 14-to-21 drinks a week over decades are two to three times more likely than non-drinkers to show atrophy in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that governs memory and the ability to keep one’s bearings.

A single drink which was considered as 10 milliliters it means eight grams of pure alcohol, which is equal to a large glass of wine, a shot of spirits such as whiskey or vodka or a pint of five-percent beer.

Last year, the British government revised its guidelines for alcohol consumption, lowering the recommended maximum for men and women to 14 units or drinks, spread out over a week. In other countries, that threshold is set higher for men is 24.5 in the United States, 35 units in Spain, 21 in Ireland and Denmark, and 19 in New Zealand.

Mental performance tests were less conclusive, Only one measuring language fluency showed a clear impact, while others showed no decline in brain function.

Finally, Researchers concluded that 'Alcohol consumption even at moderate levels is associated with adverse brain outcomes.'
