Irom Sharmila to marry soon

Manipur, May 09: 'Iron Lady' of Manipur Irom Chanu Sharmila is going quit from the politics and decided to lead a family life.

She is likely to marry her long time friend and British citizen, Desmond Coutinho. The 54-year-old Desmond is a noted human rights activist in Madurai of Tamil Nadu.

Sharmila knew the British citizen for the last few years. Desmond Coutinho first contacted Sharmila through a letter after reading about her struggle in the book Burning Bright by Deepti Priya Mehrotra in 2009. Sources said the marriage will be solemnized in Kerala very soon.



Sharmila was highly disappointed over her defeat in the elections in her native state recently. She announced that she will never take part in the electoral politics and confined to fight only on people's issues on social platforms.
