Supreme court questioned MPs

New Delhi, APRIL 27: The Supreme Court asked MPS on Wednesday, as why they didn't object to the government's decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for making PAN cards, a move which was given effect by the latest budget from July 1.

The supreme court also said "If 542 MPs in Parliment don't object? then why should we object it" a bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said.

When it was said that the Centre has earlier made a representation in the apex court that they would not make Aadhaar mandatory, the court said, "the government must be bound by it.

the above statements were made by the supreme court during the hearing of a case challenging the constitutional validity of section 139AA of the Income Tax (IT) Act.

We all know that Section 139AA was introduced through the Finance Act 2017, under this section, it is mandatory to quote Aadhaar number for the filing of income tax returns and making application for allotment of PAN number with effect from July 1 this year.

The Court also has taken into fact that tax evasion exists in India and we the citizens feel pride in not paying taxes.The top court said there was no doubt that Aadhaar should be voluntary and observed that since tax evasion existed, the government could bring in new statute to stop such leakage.

We know that tax evasion is there. When tax evasion is there, the government is trying to block these leakages by bringing new statute.

So the court couldn't anything said that the hearing will be continued on Thursday also.
