51-yr-old woman dug 60 feets well, got water

Karnataka, April 15: As we know that, Most of the people has been struggling due to lack of water sources in Summer season, especially in Villages. Here is a shocking incident has occurred in Sirsi of Uttara Kannada district.

While coming to details, A 51-year-old woman, who was being called 'Lady Bhagiratha' after she single-handedly dug a well of 60 feets and yielded water.

Gouri S Naik of Ganesh Nagar, Sirsi, wanted a readily available source of water to feed her coconut and areca plants, but she did not have enough money to build a well. So the bold lady took it upon herself and started digging. After 3 months of toiling hard, she succeeded in getting water.

Every day, she would dig for 5-6 hours, delving four feet into the ground. Only in the last leg of digging the well did she take the help of three other women to lift out the dirt. Now, she has a 60-foot deep well, with 7 feet of water in it.

Gouri, a mother of one, is a daily-wager and works as a laborer in Ganesh Nagar. She has also grown around 150 areca, 15 coconut and some banana trees around her home.

She is also a member of Dharmastala Rural Development Scheme.

"When Gouri came to the meeting, she would complain about body ache. But we did not know about her work in digging a well. It was only when we visited her home that we found out what she was doing," scheme officer Vinoda said.
